Kachok 2017

This year, I return to Kachut, the Kachok village where I lived in 2016, to complete my fieldwork.  I’ll be in Ratanakiri Province for four weeks from around July 9th – August 6th.

I’ll be taking my family with me, so Ryan and Sage and I will be able to spend our summer together and I’ll have the opportunity to share this amazing place with them.  We are so lucky to be able to travel together.

Since this trip is a shorter duration, and because I’m more focused on refining my analysis and collecting specific data than gathering large amounts of recordings, I’ll make the town of Banlung my home base and I’ll go to the village for visits of a day or two at a time to record and work with speakers.  During the time I’m in Banlung, I’ll be focused on working through data and writing.

The term of my grant is through November of 2017, by which point I’ll be finished with all travel and spending activities.  I’m hoping to have a complete draft by the end of the calendar year, and to defend my dissertation in the spring of 2018.

Follow me!  I have been documenting my experience on Instagram @elongolsen

A request:

As is customary, I have asked the Kachok chief what I can bring for the village this year.  They specifically requested medicine to treat:

  • skin rash (hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, antifungal, medicated body powder, etc.)
  • diarrhea (Immodium, Pepto-bismol, etc.) < in tablet form rather than liquid form, if possible!
  • cough (this one’s tricky since traveling with a lot of liquid is difficult, but cold medicine would be great: Dayquil, Nyquil, etc)
    • including any children’s formulas!

I also know they need:

  • first aid materials
    • band-aids, gauze and tape, etc.
    • first aid alcohol wipes
    • antibacterial ointments or creams (neosporin, bacitracin, etc)
  • reading glasses (just the over-the-counter drugstore kind!)
  • soap, especially antibacterial soaps, in bar form is best!
  • toothbrushes and toothpaste

If you have any of these items you’d like to give to the Kachok people, we may be able to arrange for me to pick them up from you, or you may send them to me.  For my address, please email me at emilylongolsen@gmail.com.

If this is inconvenient but you’d still like to help, you might be interested in sending $3-5 via Paypal (under the email address emilydlong@gmail.com), or Venmo (under the email address emilylongolsen@gmail.com) and I will make a final shopping trip the week before I leave on July 3rd.

Thank you!
